How Thermographic Camera Works

0

It is sometimes difficult to understand for most people how thermographic cameras work, but in reality the working of the same can be understood easily. There are several people around the world who use this infrared thermal based imaging camera, but they are not aware of how the image is processed or how these thermal imaging equipment systems work.

Basics of thermographic camera

Infrared camera systems work by detecting light and the light wave energy is correlated with the wavelength to provide infrared photography. Longer wavelength is responsible for low energy. This low energy can be easily detected with the help of infrared systems. Apart from the light waves, visible lights are also available that portray colors and all of these can be detected via thermographic cameras.

We are aware that violet is the color that has maximum energy and the color red has the least energy. This is how the terms infrared and ultraviolet came into the picture. The lights that are darker than red are considered as infrared and these lights are not visible by the naked human eye. This is where the infrared imaging camera system comes into play and these lights can be easily viewed with the help of the infrared systems.

Three types of Infrared lights

There are three main categories of infrared lights and these are near, infrared, thermal infrared and mid infrared. We can easily view the near infrared as it is extremely close to visible light and the wavelength of the same is somewhere between the range of 0.7 to 1.3 microns. The next category is the mid infrared and this ranges between 1.3 to 3 microns. Both of these categories of infrared lights are part of the standard electrical devices and these can be easily viewed with the help of a Thermal imaging equipment.

Use of thermographic camera systems

Thermographic cameras systems have been used by the military, firefighters and others for various industrial and civil applications. Infrared thermal based imaging camera systems are specialized devices that are equipped with special integrated chip system that detect light waves on the basis of heat signals and allow users to detect temperatures in various scenarios where it is hard to detect any crack in the electrical systems or trapped people in smoke situations. All these applications of the photography based thermal imaging equipment allow industrial and other personnel to work easy in various hazardous conditions.

Thermographic systems now come mounted in helmets and even in goggles to allow users to make the most of the technology to detect temperature based anomalies. Infrared based imaging camera has been extremely popular and come in handy in various situations, but these infrared based systems are quite expensive and not many can afford the same. But, various applications of these thermal imaging equipment make it an integral part of the workforce.
